FLEX system
Created under the aegis of lead designer Gunilla Mandsfelt, INDOOR FLEX is a furniture system that has been designed for nurseries, day-care facilities and playgroups.

The FLEX system is made of up many different components, which not only serve different purposes - such as seating, shelving or a climbing device, but in just seconds can change its appearance and with that, its purpose. A shelf on the wall or a workbench can turn into a cosy reading corner or a climbing castle to run around. The indoor FLEX system has been developed to match the KOMPAN Play Institute's strict criteria to support play value and to promote learning and inclusion.

The Award
Red Dot is well established, internationally recognised quality label for excellent design. Innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility are just some of the criteria that the Red Dot design award prize is based on.

Forty independent designers, design scholars and specialised journalists from around the globe came together in February 2016 in Essen, Germany to adjudicate over 5,200 contributions to the Red Dot competition. This year's members of the Red Dot judging panel included the fashion icon Jimmy Choo and car design legend Chris Bangle - former chief of design for BMW.

Apart from KOMPAN, brands such as Google, Apple or Artemide also registered their products. The adjudication process follows strict criteria, which is adapted each year to the latest findings in technological, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. The criteria provides a guiding framework which is filled in individually by each juror.

KOMPAN's furniture system INDOOR FLEX met the criteria with top scores and won the much sought-after "innovative design" prize!

"Permanent fixtures that look the same all year round turn children and adults into sleep-walkers, making them sensually blind, because they can easily end up repeating the same games, actions and relationships, which stops both kids and adults from thinking in new ways and coming up with fresh ideas"
Gunilla Mandsfelt Eriksen, graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
