West Park, Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton City Council needed to revamp an outdated and under-used play area to maximise play value.

Project Brief
West Park, considered one of the UK's finest and most unspoilt Victorian municipal parks, set a trend for the provision of areas for specific sporting activities. Its 17 hectares, including a lake, are just 10 minutes from Wolverhampton city centre.

The challenge for KOMPAN was to rejuvenate a tired playground using existing play equipment and combine these with new products. The under-used space would retain selected pieces of equipment that would tie in with the scheme of the new play area. Where possible the design would incorporate the playground's existing wetpour bases.

The Result
KOMPAN worked alongside the council's landscape architect to edit the play area's existing equipment and design a cohesive playground that would seamlessly incorporate old and new products, including the Altair, the Supernova, the Miram and the Saturn Carousel. This required close attention to detail such as the use of lime-colour panelling and the galvanised steel finish of the new items. The use of green wetpour and grey brick edging complemented the overall look.
