Hoo Zoo & Dinosaur World is a family-run business venture which first opened 31 years ago as a petting zoo. Since then, it has strived to become bigger and better, adding more farm animals, before moving onto more exotic and zoo animals, and eventually reopening last year with a brand-new attraction… dinosaurs!

The Brief

The existing park had been in place since around 1991, and although it worked well for Hoo Zoo, they knew it was time to invest in some newer equipment. With KOMPAN at the forefront of the running to supply the equipment, it wasn’t long before the relationship blossomed.  Hoo Zoo wasn’t looking for bespoke products but did want the ability to customise the equipment to suit their needs. Using the Solution Planner technology, KOMPAN were able to give Hoo Zoo a comprehensive look at the equipment and change key play features on each element. The benefit of this is that the client can see their vision being ‘built’ in front of them in real time.

It was decided the project would be split into 4 phases:

- Phase 1: The Man-O-War ship, for different ages and abilities.

- Phase 2: The 4-Tower Castle unit, designed to create a bespoke experience.

- Phase 3: The toddler section, low-level and sensory items.

- Phase 4: The BLOQX 6, dynamic climbing zone in Greenline (recycled ocean waste material).

The Result

As a zoo, Hoo Zoo is very conscious of conservation and minimising the impact of their carbon footprint where possible. Having a piece of equipment which has been specifically designed with carbon neutral in mind was a no-brainer for the zoo, and it has been strategically placed next to the lemur pen, who are expert climbers themselves!

The play areas are a massive hit with visitors, many of which are children or pre-teens, so having something to suit every age range is working really well, especially as a lot are repeat visitors meaning they can build their way up to the bigger equipment.

"The play areas have made such a difference to our dwell time. Instead of people being here 3-4 hours, they’re now staying 5-6 hours, and spending more money on site in the meantime. It’s fantastic."
