Sandylands Play Area, Cumbria

Project Brief

A local community group worked tirelessly to raise funds to replace their extremely worn and tired playground with an outdoor play area that would stimulate imaginative play and provide endless fun for all age groups and abilities. The school opposite specifically catered for children with special needs so the play area would be heavily used by these school children.

The group and the council had no preference whether wood or metal playground equipment was to be used and deliberately tried to be open, so as not to stifle playground designer’s creativity during the design process.

Result

Having won this tender and installed this fantastic play space, much to our delight, we were awarded the 2017 Design Award from the Kendal Civic society Committee who recognised the planning and thought that went into the design of this play area.

The design ensured the path and the majority of the play equipment was DDA accessible with age group zones separated by natural grass mounding.  The accessible path loops around, eliminating the need for a sharp increase in gradient.  Timber sleepers were laid horizontally, breaking up the path and acting as a rumble strip for wheelchair users.

Toddlers were kept to the north of the play area in a zoned area specifically designed for their use with benches and tables provided for plenty of seating for supervising adults.

KOMPAN’s 5 way swing and multi spinner are products that bridge the age gap signifying the change of area from toddler to junior. Wetpour safer surface was used with bright graphics and half spheres being used as informal seating and balance trails.

The junior equipment, located at the bottom of the park houses a COROCORD unit which adds height and excellent play value for a destination park such as this. The parkour element spans the steep slope close to the road, making use of the entire park whilst also using the natural landscapes features.
